The Ultimate System for Music Productivity

    by Saul Edmonds
    ultimate system for music productivity-web.jpg

Making Time to Make Music or How to ‘Do’

Writing music is a hard task. Creative practice is a discipline. All good work takes time. But when time is an increasingly scare commodity, we need to develop support systems that best maintain workflow and get the job done.

The ultimate system for music productivity is that system which gives you space to create. This space is a place of freedom (from distraction). Here, great things happen.

    The Art of Introversion

It takes work to make work. Creative work is oftentimes an antisocial pursuit - being the exclusive exchange between artist and medium. Yet, it is through the product of this exchange (work) that  the musician /artist is able to communicate with others in an authentic way.

We are defined by our use of time. As musicians, we are defined by the music we make.

    • A creative must create.
    • And then create more.
    • The art of making time.
    • We must strive to delight in the process, as the spoils of war belong to others.
    • Art / music is made for the world and its people.

Eco-flow. A sustainable way to work.

Eco flow is the organic movement of action and idea. It is the timely space within a creative intention. It carries the notion of engaging meaningfully in work where attention is focused on both creative process and outcome. Productivity is best achieved by sustainable means.

The best productivity system is a simple strategy to serve your eco-flow.

    1. The Upshot - outcome/ endpoint/ endgame. Define your target. What is the goal? : perhaps -finish the song / finish the mix/ design the artwork ect. Be specific (very). What is the timeframe?

    2. Break it Down - Each work is inevitably defined by the successful completion of small tasks that make the whole. Make lists. Be systematic. Keep it simple. I find ongoing value in the ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ idea.

    3. Feedback - Check your progress. Draw a straight line from your actions to the upshot. Self review - have you moved forward? Refresh the page / system. Empty the trash.

Any productivity system forces the user to become more self-aware - and that’s a good thing.

As musicians we must align our dreams within the complexities of daily life if we are to succeed. ‘The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.’  (Emile Zola)

How do you make time in your life to be your creative best?

3 daily routines to get your music out there

      by Saul Edmonds
      3 daily routines-web.jpg
      • The creation of music is a tough road.
      • The promotion of music is a tough road.
      • Where do inspiration and enterprise meet?
      • Amid the chaos of opportunity best walk a steady path.

Routine, like music - is an acquired skill. Through the establishment of daily ritual / routine, we define ourselves and creative practice. Getting your music out there (and the selfless art of promotion) - is a series of skills based in simple everyday rhythms : at the heart of which is a belief in self, process and result.

      1. Mantra

      A maxim / a moment / a loaded cliche.

Mind over matter is where mind matters most.

A mantra is a way to focus the mind. It consists of 3 - 5 motivational word tag-line. ‘Just do it’ is the well known Nike example, another : ‘art is my life/ my life is art’ by Yoko Ono. A mantra is more than mere slogan - it is the expression of an ideal and action in direct terms. Power is achieved through investment in repetition and belief as the mantra itself is repeated thousands of times over.

In productivity terms, a mantra is a best practice tool. Find your words. Believe them.

Our Roundhouse mantra is simply ‘do’. It relates both to the act of ‘do’ (do / doing / done) and the korean ‘do’ (‘the way’ / ‘the art’ / ‘the path’). Every done needs a do.

      2. A Strategy of Small Steps

      Many pixels make a picture.

Big projects can make for big problems. A certain clarity and relief is found in resolving the small. Start small. Stay small. Focus / design - one step at a time.

small steps + everyday = big results

‘It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.’ (Confucius)

To effectively get your music out there, think of the big picture, your ultimate dream. Define this further by analysis of component parts - what are the specific elements of your vision? Further de-construct these into simple tasks to be performed on a daily basis. Tick the boxes one by one.

      3. Branding is Vital

Effective branding = a consistent message.

As a designer / musician - we must address the issue of self promotion, be it to find an audience or get work. Successful branding is the distillation of who / how / what you are - to a simple compound essence. It is the alchemy of presentation, image and content.

How to use branding for promotion.

Find your core message. Build this message into everything you do. This includes graphical presentation but extends to promotion and action. Everything should align to your core message and communicate this clearly to your target audience. Make it easy for them to know you.

As Bruce Lee said :‘The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.”

What are your thoughts: is a strategy of small steps useful? Can a mantra make it work?

When is Bad Music Actually Good?

        by Saul Edmonds
when is bad music good - web.jpg

        The Critic

The good, the bad and the (merely) ok - are intrinsic concepts that underscore our work as professional designers and musicians. With an oftentimes brutal assessment of our creations, we determine if a work is to be carefully nurtured in the light of day or darkly buried without remorse in the dungeon/ trash/ delete.

As creatives, ideas are our stock in trade. We must confront the validity of the good/ bad dichotomy on a daily basis. A careful and confident decision making process ultimately determines client response and work value.

        Critical Thinking

        • The good, the bad and project management.
        • The right answer vs the right process.

Every designer/ musician makes the call.

Bad as Prototype : many bad ideas to make one good.

Negative/ positive notions are most effective when utilized as deductive methodologies.

It was Albert Einstein who famously said ‘The physicist’s greatest tool is his wastebasket.’

Process should be prioritized and focused.

While perfection is never possible, creativity is ultimately an expression of the sum choices that exist between objective and solution. Sets of restrictions frame outcomes at all times. Restrictions create tension. This is challenging and exciting.

Remember, design strategies are always rough guides (rather than maps).

        • Idealism and idea-ism
        • Don’t stop believing.
        • Design is a process, hyperbola, spectrum and social response.
        • Subject to the vagaries of fashion.

People change and the world keeps moving. What was once ‘bad’ - can be redefined and invigorated. Assumptions are but timely variables of limited lifespan. Bad is the battleground for the good.

Quality of communication is the greatest criteria for effectiveness at any given time where music and art is the interface to life experience.

Top 5 Creative Tips for the Artist Musician

          by Saul Edmonds

Top 5 Creative Tips for the Artist Musician

          >> The ROUNDHOUSE WAY - The Way of DO

          1. Make heaps of stuff. We apply the same creative process to music as to visuals.
          2. (It is the ‘Do’ - mantra.) If you need to produce 12 songs for your next album - produce 24 and refine. Work quickly at this stage though : this is the free n easy ‘draft’ stage.
          3. Stay focussed. Mind like water.
          4. Accidents are your best friend. So many vital discoveries in science have been the result of chance. Deliberately build error into your process. Invest thought and systems into your creative strategies. Process above results. Forget our cultural notions of survival of the fittest (where only the best survive). Sometimes the best solutions are the least suspected. We are the scientists of sound.
          5. Cut n paste. After your draft stage : step back. Take the best bit from one and put with another. Experiment. Explore. Above all - don’t be precious. Serve the art and not the artist.
          6. Don’t be critical / judgmental. This is best expressed in the Edward de Bono ‘Six Hats’ method. Leave your ‘judgmental hat’ at the door. Do first. Access later. Critique constructively. Begin again.

Music is good. Art is fun. This is your life (so best enjoy it).

3 Science Discoveries - that were chanced!

          • Plastic
          • In 1907 shellac was used as insulation in electronics. In 1907, home chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland experimented to produce a shellac alternative. Shellac was made from beetles and used as an expensive insulation in electronics. Baekeland’s experiments yielded a moldable material that could take high temperatures without distorting - thus was plastic born.
          • Coke
          • In 1886, pharmacist John Pemberton attempted to make a cure for headaches. He mixed together various ingredients. After eight years of being sold in a drug store , coke was marketed in bottles.
          • Penicillin
          • On day in 1928, biologist Alexander Fleming left his research area without cleaning up. Upon his return he saw a strange fungus on some of his cultures. He noted that bacteria did not survive near these cultures. Penicillin became the first antibiotic.
