    The question concerning why Google Apps are not available for Windows Phones can not be answered in one sentence. 

    This appears to be one of those complicated relationships that only the two parties involved really understand what the core issue could be. For those of us looking in from the outside, we can speculate and assume, but that is all we really have to go by.

    Taking a look from an impartial point of view, we look more closely at the 5 top reasons why Google Apps are not available for Windows Phones. (Just like any relationship, the deeper we look, the more obvious the problem appears.)

    1. Ending a Relationship

    Google and Microsoft definitely have an interesting relationship to say the least. 

    Even though these two companies would love to break free of one another, they need each other to a small extent. 

    Google has developed Google Docs to try and replace Microsoft Office, so then Microsoft developed Bing to replace Google Search. The fact is they still need each other because Google Chrome runs best on Microsoft Windows, and then Microsoft needs Google Apps to try and entice new users to come on board. 

    That being said, Windows Phones is the one hurting the most from this relationship. As of today, there is only one Google app available in the Windows App Store, and it was last updated years ago. Google Apps is getting more bang for their buck at the Apple Store, so they have not even considered expansion.
     

    2. No Respect for the Windows Phone

    It is really clear by the amount of Google Apps in the Windows Phone App Store that they have little or no respect for this platform. 

    The biggest reason why the apps are not available at this time has to simply do with market share. Look at it from the perspective of the marketing giant Google. They currently share about 70% of the market with their Android, compared to a measly 8% that the Windows Phone holds. 

    That is not enticing enough for Google to want to play in that game. 

    Microsoft just is not grabbing the market by storm, so in the eyes of Google, there really is no fire that needs their attention at this time.
     

    3. The Windows Phone Isn't Google-Friendly

    If you strip away all the theories about why Google Apps are not available for Windows Phones, you can not get away from the fact that Google is in competition with Apple and Microsoft. 

    Looking at the amount of apps in the Windows Store, Google doesn't feel the urge to push the issue. 

    Now the same can be said a few years ago when Google had basically nothing in the Apple App Store. Then something happened, Apple popularity exploded. When Apple all of a sudden became a threat to Google, all of a sudden you begin to see an abundance of Google apps showing up in the Apple App Store. 

    Once they realized Apple was becoming too popular, they decided that they needed to be in that space. Market shares play a huge role, and right now Google just doesn't feel like they need to be worried about Microsoft.

    Looking deeper, when the iPhone was released, it came installed with Google Maps, Google Search YouTube, and a Mail app. 

    When the Windows Phone was released, it came with Bing Maps, SkyDrive, Bing Search, no ability to make 3rd-party browsers Google-friendly
    . 

    Even if Google did release YouTube or Hangouts to the Windows App Store, those users are going to be making use of Bing Search and IE, so there is zero benefit or incentive to make the effort. 

    Google also knows that even though people want to try these Windows Phones, they won't without certain apps. Even though people would consider the phones, Google is holding the cards right now and isn't budging.

    4. Windows Phones are Dangerous

    Another reason why Google Apps are not available for Windows Phones, Google sees them as a threat. 

    Google feels that the relationship they have with Apple is not threatening at all, they are not worried in the least that users are going to ditch because Google feels Apple does not have many services that will conflict with theirs. 

    On the other hand, Microsoft is a much bigger threat because they have Office, Bing Search, Skype, and Outlook. If Google loses a user to the Windows Phone, Google stands to lose more than they want to consider. Google doesn't want to give Microsoft any attention or the users may start doing the same.
     

    5. Windows Phone Issues

    Perhaps the biggest reason that Google is not going to play nice with Microsoft is that Google simply has a major problem with the Windows platform in general. 

    The best way to explain this issue is that Microsoft offers users alternatives to many of the services that are already being provided by Google. Google feels that once a person tries the phone, they may start to get more comfortable with Bing or Skype, and rely less on all the services that Google offers. 

    Right now, by limiting the apps from showing up in the Windows App Store, Google feels that little to none of their users will be jumping ship anytime soon to be the first to experiment on the other platform.

    These are 5 of the reasons why Google Apps are not available for Windows Phones. Google does not feel like they have to be worried about the competition as long as they are taking care of things on their home front. If Google can keep the user happy on their platform, they know the user is less likely to be looking for another.

    The only thing that could change this relationship is if Microsoft becomes like Apple, a huge threat, and if that occurs, Google will certainly do whatever it takes to stay in front of their captive audience. For now, Google is not worried.

      If the task can be performed in one click, then make it one click and move on to other areas. When you can reduce the clicks to get to the desired results, the users will be more likely to make use of the apps.

      1. When you are ignoring human interface guidelines (HIG), your mobile app is doomed to fail. This should be the main focus of your design efforts.

      2. If you are making the tap regions too small, users are going to have a difficult time performing tasks and grow increasingly frustrated with the performance of the mobile app. Remember that everyone has different size fingers.

      3. Stop trying to cram so much into one space. If there is more than a single thing to do on that screen, it will become a problem. That may work on a laptop, but mobile is going to become a real issue.

      4. Never assume that the user is going to completely understand multi-finger gestures. Users know how to pinch, tap, and swipe, but when these gestures need to be combined to perform a task, you could lose a huge part of the audience.

      5. The biggest UX pitfall to avoid is slow responding features. When a user drags or taps something, it needs to move immediately. The key to avoiding this pitfall is responsiveness, responsiveness, responsiveness!

      6. Make sure that the navigation on the app is clear. If the user can not get around easily, they will not be using the app very long.

              To better understand what is brand storytelling, you have to start thinking differently about your marketing than you have in the past. 

              With brand storytelling, it is all about the customer, although many get confused here and think this has to be all about the business.

              If you get this wrong, the story is not going to connect with your audience like it would if the story made them the center of focus. On the surface, your business might not be telling a clear linear story, but if you created the story of your brand correctly, it will influence customer interactions, marketing messages, and your site's copy.

              Your Customer Is The Focus

              The bottom line is this, you are not the centre of focus in your brand story, the customer is. 

              Once you understand this concept the rest of the pieces will fall into place and your marketing communications will transform. Look at it this way, your customer has a need, that is why they came to your website in the first place.

              The job of your brand is to use the right tools to guide them to achieve their goals, not yours. 

              Now that you better understand what brand storytelling is about, we have to focus on learning how to tell that story.

              Here are 3 ways to effectively tell the story of your brand and keeping the focus on the customer.

              1. Reinforcing Your Brand's Purpose or Mission

              Rather than promoting your low prices, your fast shipping, or the fact that you have been in business for so many years, your story needs to focus on the needs of the customers. 

              Although you sell specific items, all your customers have different needs and reasons for shopping at your store. Some customers are not concerned about price, others do not care how long you have been in business, but they all have certain needs. 

              If you can make the customer feel value through your brand - you have successfully engaged them. 

              So to do this effectively and to cover all your customers, your brand storytelling needs to reinforce the needs being met of your customers. 

              Your brand should focus on showcasing high quality merchandise that will last, so the customer is not shopping again for the same items in a few months because the materials are inferior. 

              Focus on how the customer is going to feel before, during, and after the purchase. Make the shopping experience personal for them, let them know every step of the way their business is valued. Having exceptional customer service is an asset here, like having a live chat feature so customers can speak to a live person to get immediate answers during their shopping experience. 

              The mission of your company needs to be on making the customer feel valued each step of the way.

              2. Highlighting Your Brand's Values

              One of the ways to expand upon brand storytelling is to highlight your brand's values. 

              When your values are providing a unique shopping experience for the customer, then you have to make changes to reflect that. 

              For example, a customer comes to your store to buy a shirt, but they are not sure which color or style to buy. It is one thing to have a live operator help with the questions, but that does not help the buyer imagine what the outfit is going to look like on them or with other pieces. The solution in this instance could be an interactive program that allows the user to take different pieces in the store and mix with others to see in real-time what the outfit looks like. 

              Many eyeglass retailers have already jumped on this feature, creating a program that allows the user to upload their face, and then as they choose glasses from the store it is placed in real-time on their face. This not only allows the customer to see what the glasses look like on their face, it is part of the brand storytelling that instills confidence in the buyer that this company really cares. 

              These implementations in your web design are part of your brand, but they put the customer front and centre.

              3. Engaging Specific Customers or Groups

              Now when it comes to brand storytelling, the above examples were designed to improve the shopping experience for all customers. 

              Now we have to fine-tune the process so that you are engaging specific groups or customers. The way that you do this without isolating other buyers is try to incorporate as many groups into one process. Chances are if you do this correctly, most people will fall into one or more of the groups, so they don't feel like you are leaving them out. So again we target the clothing retail outlets online for our example, and here you want to try and target certain groups of buyers. 

              The way you do it on the inside is create tags for each piece of apparel, youth, adult, toddle, men's, women's, XS, XXXL, long sleeve, etc. Now when the buyers arrive at the store, rather than leave them on their own to make their way through all the inventory, the website greets them and asks for a few pieces of information to personalize their shopping experience. Once they enter youth, female, XS, the website will present links to those items so the buyers can shop like the store rearranged everything just for them.

              Your Customer Is The Hero

              The goal of brand storytelling is to provide authentic value to the customer that keeps them coming back over and over. 

              The customer must feel like you are rolling out the red carpet each time they come to your website, so your brand story needs to connect with providing them a unique shopping experience that is all about them.

                                                        In a recent study that was conducted by IBM, they discovered that for every dollar that you are investing in the User Experience (UX), it will return between ten and a hundred fold on the original investment. With so many different ways to enhance the user experience, many people get overwhelmed thinking they have too little or too many, and simply do nothing. This is a very important part of app development, so having a detailed checklist allows you to work through everything to make sure you are giving your customers the best possible user experience.

                                                        The following detailed information will greatly help your project coordinator in designing and moving forward with the mobile product development project. Just because there are a thousand ways to enhance the user experience, does not mean that you have to be using them all.

                                                        If you follow this mobile UX design checklist, your users are going to be raving about the experience. 

                                                        1. Comprehensive Data
                                                        Make sure that before you begin groundwork on your app - you know exactly what type of metrics must be tracked or acquired from the user that has downloaded your app.

                                                        2. User Flow
                                                        Before you release your app - in order to ensure everyone is having the best possible user experience - the flow of your app needs to be tested so you see how your user engages with your app, from screen to screen, until they reach their desired result.

                                                        3. The Red Route
                                                        It is important that during the design of your app, your developer logically groups functions and content in line with what your users require.

                                                        4. User Feedback
                                                        Experience shows that your app will mature as users grow and your community flourishes. Your users are going to give you plenty of feedback about what changes they want. Be sure you have a system in place for listening to those requests and taking quick action before you lose your audience. 

                                                        5. The 5 W's
                                                        If you want to perfect the user experience during app development, your team needs to be asking the five w's of design; who is the app for, what are they using it for, when will they use it, where are they using it, why do they need this app?

                                                        6. Analysing Competition
                                                        Just don't let the competition steamroll your business, take the time to see what they are doing right, what are they doing wrong, what could you do better, and what are they doing you need to be doing? Don't reinvent the wheel, just make it better.

                                                        7. The Prototype
                                                        Don't put all that effort into making features in your app before you see how they work on paper. Draw out exactly how each part of the user experience will deliver value, and if it is not something that enhances the experience, move on.

                                                        8. Brainstorming
                                                        Get all the people on this project in one room and grab the whiteboards! A nice brainstorming session could open doors to ideas no one even considered before. It is amazing what can come from a brainstorming session where everyone has a voice to be heard.

                                                        9. The Style Sheet
                                                        A style sheet will help everyone to be on the same page as far as visual consistency between all the screens. Once you come up with at least two versions, you will be able to ultimately test A/B variations and clearly determine the version that is most desirable. 

                                                        10. Wire-framing
                                                        This digital blueprint will help the team to structure the user story, red routes, and flow of the app while defining how the navigation system ties everything together.

                                                        11. Gesture Support
                                                        Not every user is going to be right-handed. Make sure there is adequate focus on swiping for different users, dragging, pinching, rotating, and motion detection that could be affected by different wearables or smartphones.

                                                        12. Loading Times
                                                        No one likes a slow-loading app, so be sure to test loads during different parts of the user experience. If things are grinding to a halt, trim the fat and get things moving along before users begin leaving poor feedback.

                                                        13. Error Attribution
                                                        There are going to be errors along the way, from a user entering the wrong password to the app crashing. Make sure the team can identify who is responsible for the error and how it is communicated to the right people to get it fixed. Usability issues early on in the app release can sink a ship quickly.

                                                        14. Pop-Ups
                                                        The pop-up can be useful to help getting feedback from the user, but if it interrupts their experience or happens to frequently, you are going to lose them by distracting from the overall experience.

                                                        15. Font Size
                                                        The size of the font that you are using in the app can have a huge impact on user experience. If the user has to keep pinching the screen to read the content, they are going to grow increasingly frustrated with the experience. Stick with a font size at 14px or 16px, then let the user adjust if needed.

                                                        16. Call-to-Action
                                                        The call to action buttons, links, images, must be clearly visible or the user could scroll right by it and you lose an opportunity. If you can squint your eyes and the call-to-action is gone, you didn't make it clear enough. Bold is better in this instance. 

                                                        17. Settings Feature
                                                        The majority of people who use your app are going to want to customise the settings to their own liking. This is a good thing, unless you make it a challenge for them to change the settings. Make it simple for the user to change their experience.

                                                        18. Mobile Interactions
                                                        Be sure that you have plenty of social share buttons or ways the user can share the experience with their inner circle easily. Making life for user easier will result in more targeted traffic finding your app.

                                                        This 18 point checklist for your mobile UX design should help you to get the project off to a great start and hit the ground running. Many of these steps are a work in progress and are ongoing, so if your users are making requests to enhance your app experience - listen, take action and adjust accordingly.
