Game Music and Sounds from 1980s

          by Saul Edmonds

At Roundhouse, we have a penchant for retro gaming.

Check out some well known and some nearly forgotten music and sounds from video games of the 1980s.

          1. Pacman

          Namco’s classic arcade game.

The developer of the classic Pacman arcade game was Namco. Toshio Kai is responsible for the sound and music.

          2. Space Invaders

          The classic future shooter game.

Also check out the 80s video by ‘Player One’.

          3. Frogger

So simple and yet strangely addictive.

          4. Donkey Kong

This classic game is from 1981. Donkey Kong was the creation of Nintendo artist Shigeru Miyamoto. He designed the entire game himself including the music.

          5. Tetris

This beloved puzzle video game was released in 1984.

          6. Pong

Who hasn’t played this abstract tennis match? Good Sounds too.

          7. Asteroids

Simple graphics and stressfully addictive gameplay.

          8. Star Castle

Nice vector graphics but remember that success requires you to control your ship.

          9. Simon

          Simon is waiting for you.

          10. Moon Patrol

Retro graphics and funky techno background music is a timeless combination.

Game Sound of the early 1980s - 5 Powerful Lessons from the Classics

            by Saul Edmonds
            the key-web.jpg

The Games of the early 1980s were in many ways defined by sound Digital sound was revolutionising the new gameplay - with key characters being defined by sound and music elements alone.

These addictive and repetitive themes enhanced games in a way never experienced before, creating that compelling dramatic tension we have grown to love. Dedicated gamers have long known that great sound design is essential to a great gameplay experience.

Sound + Image = Definitive Moments in Play

            (The Essential Keys)

The best games of the early 1980s all featured excellent sound design. Think Pac Man (1980), Donkey Kong (1981), Tetris (1985), Super Mario Bros. (1985) and Tempest - Atari’s first vector game in colour (1981).

All good. Really good. These games are still fun to play 25 years later.

The sound design presented within these early titles is the forefather of sound design today. There is much to be gained from past masters. So, what are the top 5 lessons that we can learn from a trip through time?

            1. The Big Idea

Ideas are everything in the Game World. When beginning a new project carefully identify the central premise or core idea and diligently serve that concept throughout.

            Example : Super Mario Bros.

In 1985 Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. for the NES. Composer Koji Kondom sets a new standard. The creative sound and music design is tightly integrated with the onscreen action and continues to develop throughout. Sound cues add layers of meaning to character status. This was innovation at its best - sound design moves beyond ‘cinematic conventions’ to realtime gameplay.

            2. Simple is Best

‘Addictive’ does not mean ‘complicated’.  A simple puzzle can be best matched with simple sound.

            Example : Tetris

1985 saw Tetris released upon the world. This puzzler’s puzzle met with immediate success. The simple yet compelling gameplay was matched by a memorable muzac score - the kind of muzac that gets in your head and stays there forever.

            3. Patience in your Planning

Take time to develop ideas. Keep it clear, experiment, be methodical, review. Both gameplay and sound design have a lot in common.

            Example : Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong was released in 1981. The success of the game owed much to this deceptively simple soundtrack. A well resolved solution which remains unforgettable to fans to this day.

            4. The Devil in the Detail

Detail can be a great thing, but never stray too far from ‘The Big Idea’. Each sound must have meaning and relate directly to the action taking place. Serve the message with the medium and put the story first at all times.

Example : Tempest - Sound and Fury

Atari’s first color vector game - Tempest - was unleased in 1981. True to the title, Tempest featured a big soundtrack with lots of power. A true tempest of noise n sound. Think big. (Interestingly, Tempest made use of Atari’s new ‘pokey’ chip - primarily designed to generate sound.)

            5. Have Fun

Making a game ‘fun’ is takes a lot of hard work. But you must enjoy the process to get the best results. One thing we can definitely learn from the early 80s was that the sound designers were never afraid to experiment. Try vocoders, pitch shift, morphing sounds. Let go - you might be surprised at the result.

            Example : Pac-Man

Catchy sounds, lots of elements, in yer brain ditties, the endless eating of dots and more than 100,000 sales in the US alone.

            Need we say more?

              • The basic concept : select instruments, layer sounds, create loops.
              • Compose entire tracks.
              • It’s intuitive, addictive and surprisingly easy to get your head around this nifty app.

              Come to Life

Flourish is all about phrases and loops - represented as colourfully strong graphical elements of rather striking beauty. The elegant and evolving visuals is a key feature. Simply select images on screen to extend play or create new musical sequences.

              • Explore
              • Create.
              • Evolve.

Let the fresh imagery inspire you as you open a chain of symbols and instruments that feed and structure your composition. Layer upon layer.

The intuitive nature of Flourish ensures that anyone can develop a complete performance in a surprisingly short amount of time. Creatively relaxing.

                    Creative App Review: Infinity Gene

                    by Saul Edmonds
                    space-invader-web.jpg

To our great delight we have discovered the brilliant Infinity Gene.

As one of the most refreshing gameplay experiences we have had in a long time, it definitively proves that the dead can be reborn anew. Infinity Gene is Space Invaders - but astoundingly recreated with incredible graphics and sound to match.

                    Gameplay - fast n furious

                    Imagery - most beautiful

Infinity Gene for the iPhone is an expanded version of the Japanese hand held game. It begins as the classic Atari Space Invaders single shooter but becomes so much more. With an advanced arsenal of weapons and unrestricted on-screen movement - the game evolves as you play. Unlock the unlockables: laser laden crafts, claustrophobic extra stages, more lives than ever before.

Choose from ‘Easy’ or ‘Normal’ difficulty levels - ‘Hard’ only unlocks with continued play.

Wisely, shooting is set to auto-fire. The controls respond with surgical precision. Just touch and hold any part of the screen to manoeuvre your valiant ship. With one finger behind your defiant micro craft - get set for some surprising gameplay in the battlefield of Space 2D.

The graphic galleries offer an innovativly geometric war machine that the discovery of which is a reward unto itself.

Infinity Gene also features a new music menu option. Select a song from your iPhone’s library to play a game generated from the song data.

Crunching big beats in endlessness of space is always a good thing.

                    Watch the Official Trailer

Yeah - we highly recommend it.

3 Quick Tips to Remember when using Audio in Web Design

                      by Saul Edmonds
                      iphone ringtones-web.jpg

An acknowledgment of ‘bandwidth issues’ should not prevent designers from utilising audio in a majority of web projects.

                      Why?

                      • Richer forms of content provide many benefits - not the least of which is enhancing the user experience.
                      • Richer content is particularly relevant when viewing the internet upon mobile devices, all of which feature excellent audio capabilities.
                      • Many websites are ostensibly improved when audio is meaningfully integrated into the design concept. But how to use it effectively and minimise any potential bandwidth constraints?

Read on for 3 quick tips when using audio in web design.

                      1. Ensure your audio can play on as many web browsers as possible.

There are several ways to embed a sound in a web page. Some are better than others.

Flash makes it easy to embed audio in a way that works with most browsers. Yet, browsers such as Safari on the iPhone and iPad don’t support Flash at all. HTML5 features the new audio element This allows you to embed an audio file in a web page and control playback via JavaScript. In addition, it doesn’t require any plugin and works on most modern web browsers.

                      2. Stay alert to file sizes and optimise your audio files.

For bandwidth savings, don’t automatically download audio files until requested.

                      3. Don’t auto-play - play only when a link is clicked. This respects visitors who may not want to hear music at that time.

Audio is a great addition to your next web project.

Consider this - the most effective communication always involves both sight and sound.

Lord of the Ring(tones) A Brief History of the Ringtone

                        by Saul Edmonds
                        Lord of the ringtones-web.jpg

Ringtones - the expression of individuation by sound and cell

Ringtones are omnipresent element of our life.

The call of mobiles are everywhere you go.

Many consider the choice of a ringtone to be important when customising their phone. But - when did the concept arise to customise what had hitherto been standardised? (Note that the historic “ring  ring” of a landline telephone results from an electric current generated by the switch or exchange to which the telephone is connected. The mobile phone is in effect a two way radio, where the voice is converted into radio waves and sent to a nearby base station for wider transmission.)

When did innovation and creativity :

                        fly without wings

                        into telephone rings?

                        The Early Years

                        - May 1996

The first mobile phone was released with monophonic customisable ringtones: the Japanese NTT DoCoMo Digital Mova N103 Hyper by NEC. (It had a few preset songs in MIDI format.)

                        - September 1996

Digital Minimo D319 by Denso became available. This was the first mobile phone where a user could input original tunes -  not just presets. These phones were a huge hit in Japan: consider - a book published in 1998 providing info on how to customise ringtones to play popular tunes sold more than 3.5 million copies.

                        - 1998

Radiolinja - a Finnish mobile operator now known as Elisa - started a service called Harmonium. This was the first downloadable mobile ringtone service. Monophonic ringtones, where a single note plays at a time, were delivered via sms.

                        - 2001

Nokia 3510 was the first phone designed to utilise polyphonic ring tones. Other phone companies adopted the MIDI standard and polyphonic sounds - where multiple sounds can play at once - soon became the standard.

                        - 2004

Realtones (also truetones, mastertones) which play ‘real’ music - as opposed to midi imitations - were integrated firstly into Nokia at this time. This first format was AMR-WB, which effectively allowed an excerpt from the original recording to be used as a ringtone.

The AMR format has been since replaced by ringtones that use the same format as full track downloads - MP3, AAC, or WMA. For example, the iphone uses the same format for ringtones (AAC) as it uses for tracks sold in itunes.

                        - 2005

All major mobile companies incorporated MP3 players into their handsets. (Although the first MP3 players were incorporated as early as 2001.) Today, more than half of all mobile phones in the world have an MP3 player. An interesting historical note is that Ricky Martin was the first artist to sell songs as MP3 file downloads directly to mobile phones.

The Ultimate System for Music Productivity

                          by Saul Edmonds
                          ultimate system for music productivity-web.jpg

Making Time to Make Music or How to ‘Do’

Writing music is a hard task. Creative practice is a discipline. All good work takes time. But when time is an increasingly scare commodity, we need to develop support systems that best maintain workflow and get the job done.

The ultimate system for music productivity is that system which gives you space to create. This space is a place of freedom (from distraction). Here, great things happen.

                          The Art of Introversion

It takes work to make work. Creative work is oftentimes an antisocial pursuit - being the exclusive exchange between artist and medium. Yet, it is through the product of this exchange (work) that  the musician /artist is able to communicate with others in an authentic way.

We are defined by our use of time. As musicians, we are defined by the music we make.

                          • A creative must create.
                          • And then create more.
                          • The art of making time.
                          • We must strive to delight in the process, as the spoils of war belong to others.
                          • Art / music is made for the world and its people.

Eco-flow. A sustainable way to work.

Eco flow is the organic movement of action and idea. It is the timely space within a creative intention. It carries the notion of engaging meaningfully in work where attention is focused on both creative process and outcome. Productivity is best achieved by sustainable means.

The best productivity system is a simple strategy to serve your eco-flow.

                          1. The Upshot - outcome/ endpoint/ endgame. Define your target. What is the goal? : perhaps -finish the song / finish the mix/ design the artwork ect. Be specific (very). What is the timeframe?

                          2. Break it Down - Each work is inevitably defined by the successful completion of small tasks that make the whole. Make lists. Be systematic. Keep it simple. I find ongoing value in the ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ idea.

                          3. Feedback - Check your progress. Draw a straight line from your actions to the upshot. Self review - have you moved forward? Refresh the page / system. Empty the trash.

Any productivity system forces the user to become more self-aware - and that’s a good thing.

As musicians we must align our dreams within the complexities of daily life if we are to succeed. ‘The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.’  (Emile Zola)

How do you make time in your life to be your creative best?

3 daily routines to get your music out there

                            by Saul Edmonds
                            3 daily routines-web.jpg
                            • The creation of music is a tough road.
                            • The promotion of music is a tough road.
                            • Where do inspiration and enterprise meet?
                            • Amid the chaos of opportunity best walk a steady path.

Routine, like music - is an acquired skill. Through the establishment of daily ritual / routine, we define ourselves and creative practice. Getting your music out there (and the selfless art of promotion) - is a series of skills based in simple everyday rhythms : at the heart of which is a belief in self, process and result.

                            A maxim / a moment / a loaded cliche.

Mind over matter is where mind matters most.

A mantra is a way to focus the mind. It consists of 3 - 5 motivational word tag-line. ‘Just do it’ is the well known Nike example, another : ‘art is my life/ my life is art’ by Yoko Ono. A mantra is more than mere slogan - it is the expression of an ideal and action in direct terms. Power is achieved through investment in repetition and belief as the mantra itself is repeated thousands of times over.

In productivity terms, a mantra is a best practice tool. Find your words. Believe them.

Our Roundhouse mantra is simply ‘do’. It relates both to the act of ‘do’ (do / doing / done) and the korean ‘do’ (‘the way’ / ‘the art’ / ‘the path’). Every done needs a do.

                            2. A Strategy of Small Steps

                            Many pixels make a picture.

Big projects can make for big problems. A certain clarity and relief is found in resolving the small. Start small. Stay small. Focus / design - one step at a time.

small steps + everyday = big results

‘It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.’ (Confucius)

To effectively get your music out there, think of the big picture, your ultimate dream. Define this further by analysis of component parts - what are the specific elements of your vision? Further de-construct these into simple tasks to be performed on a daily basis. Tick the boxes one by one.

                            3. Branding is Vital

Effective branding = a consistent message.

As a designer / musician - we must address the issue of self promotion, be it to find an audience or get work. Successful branding is the distillation of who / how / what you are - to a simple compound essence. It is the alchemy of presentation, image and content.

How to use branding for promotion.

Find your core message. Build this message into everything you do. This includes graphical presentation but extends to promotion and action. Everything should align to your core message and communicate this clearly to your target audience. Make it easy for them to know you.

As Bruce Lee said :‘The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.”

What are your thoughts: is a strategy of small steps useful? Can a mantra make it work?

When is Bad Music Actually Good?

                              The Critic

The good, the bad and the (merely) ok - are intrinsic concepts that underscore our work as professional designers and musicians. With an oftentimes brutal assessment of our creations, we determine if a work is to be carefully nurtured in the light of day or darkly buried without remorse in the dungeon/ trash/ delete.

As creatives, ideas are our stock in trade. We must confront the validity of the good/ bad dichotomy on a daily basis. A careful and confident decision making process ultimately determines client response and work value.

                              Critical Thinking

                              • The good, the bad and project management.
                              • The right answer vs the right process.

Every designer/ musician makes the call.

Bad as Prototype : many bad ideas to make one good.

Negative/ positive notions are most effective when utilized as deductive methodologies.

It was Albert Einstein who famously said ‘The physicist’s greatest tool is his wastebasket.’

Process should be prioritized and focused.

While perfection is never possible, creativity is ultimately an expression of the sum choices that exist between objective and solution. Sets of restrictions frame outcomes at all times. Restrictions create tension. This is challenging and exciting.

Remember, design strategies are always rough guides (rather than maps).

                              • Idealism and idea-ism
                              • Don’t stop believing.
                              • Design is a process, hyperbola, spectrum and social response.
                              • Subject to the vagaries of fashion.

People change and the world keeps moving. What was once ‘bad’ - can be redefined and invigorated. Assumptions are but timely variables of limited lifespan. Bad is the battleground for the good.

Quality of communication is the greatest criteria for effectiveness at any given time where music and art is the interface to life experience.
